“Reflection” is a Holocaust remembrance and human rights museum in the city of Montreal, Canada. The museum aims to raise awareness of history and encourage involvement among visitors through active participation in its activity, thus continuing to preserve history and memory. The museum is designed so that the visitor goes through an experience at the end of which he processes it and undergoes personal reflection.
The idea of reflection on which the museum’s design is based begins with the division of a building mass into two parts in order to create a different experience in each of them. The mass is divided into topographic surfaces, including interface points that serve as a connection between the floors, creating a flowing walking experience. The surfaces are penetrated by a central memorial space around which the entire museum is built. In this space, each floor allows a unique experience and opportunity for the visitors’ eyes to intersect. At the top of the space is a double opening. One illuminates it from the outside and envelops it in a light that distinguishes it from the rest of the spaces. The second opening illuminates the inside of the space, enhances the experience of commemoration, and gives it infinite meaning when the visitor looks at the sky.
Additional light openings illuminate the top floor and the various display spaces scattered throughout the space. The materiality and arrangement of the spaces as objects in space, allow the visitor to walk in a double experience and choose his way between and within the spaces. In contrast, the lower floor is a multi-purpose floor, where there are supporting spaces and educational and social activities take place. Another aspect of the concept is reflected in the building’s construction. The use of materials with as little environmental impact as possible in the design framework is an example of environmental responsibility.
